MULTIPLAYER

I kick ass! Unless it had something to do with the pings...

I recently got a home network, and discovered the joy of multiplayer Doom. I personally prefer a cooperative game, where you and other people go around playing single player mode together. But you can also play a deathmatch, where you and other players run around just killing eachother!

How to play an internet game

To play an internet game, you first need to download
ZDaemon. Zdaemon is an amazing program that finds Doom games. You can play co-op, deathmatch, and capture the flag. You can even play your own wad with other people using file transfer! GetWad (a small program that searches the internet for a specified wad) is bundled with ZDaemon.
ZDaemon is insanely cool. At any given time, there can be over 70 players online, even more players than Quake usually has online. ZDaemon is complete with skins, bots, and your own in-depth record of your user statistics, incluing how many frags (kills) you've gotten with each weapon, a ranking system (yes, that's right, you can see how close you are to being the world's best Doomer), experience points, and your frag-death ratio. And it's all free. Doom lives! Get ZDaemon!!

How to play a home network game

First, you want to download Doom Legacy, an enhanced version of Doom, and put it on every computer on your network that you plan to play Doom on. It has multiplayer menus very similar to more recent games like Quake 3 Arena.
Now you're ready to play a network game. Open up Doom Legacy on the computer you want to host the game. In the main menu, select "Multiplayer." Now select "Start server." Setup the game anyway you want and give the server a name. Now select "Start." Now you just wait for other players.
If you are joining a game, open up Doom Legacy. In the main menu, select "Multiplayer." Now select "Connect server," then "Local LAN." Join the server you want to join.
To talk to other players, press [T] and type your message. If you have a phone hooked up in every room a player is in, I would suggest using them. You really just have to push buttons until the phone finally shuts up.
