Doom Bible

The Doom Bible was a design outline written by Tom Hall over a year before the release of Doom. Largely incomplete, it's pretty much his vision of a plot-heavy Doom, describing everything from an introductory movie to details of several playable characters. Thanks to Doomworld for this gem of Dooming history.

Chex Quest

Chex Quest is bizarre indeed. This was distributed in boxes of Chex cereal for a while in 1996. In this total conversion of Doom 1, you play a piece of Chex cereal shooting at green things for one reason or another. Enemies, weapons, and level design are all crap, but I love this mod (for obvious reasons). You can download either the Ultimate Chex Quest version, linked above, or the original Chex Quest 1 and 2. The originals run in MS-DOS, so those with modern operating systems should get the Ultimate version, a combination of 1 and 2 running on Doom Legacy.

Masters of Doom

Masters of Doom is about the only Doom book aside from strategy guides. It is written almost in the style of a novel, chronicling all of id Software's games up to the early development of Doom 3. It covers everything from the childhoods of the id guys to the end of the most important friendship in video game history.

Bill Gates Sucks at Doom

This is a video made for a Microsoft Halloween celebration plugging DirectX and Windows 95. The video shows Bill Gates playing Doom (notice he has God Mode on) until he steps in front of the camera with a trenchcoat and shotgun and starts talking about Windows being a great gaming platform, etc. Definitely something to see.

Doom 2 Transformed Preview

This wad contains the first three maps of Doom 2 Transformed, a deathmatch wad-in-progress that consists of major changes to the original Doom 2 maps. These maps are very fun and interesting, and the music is great. This wad was submitted to me by Joey Jordison.

Doom Alpha Versions

This is the alpha versions of Doom, showing Doom in development as early as two months. These are really interesting, and some are very weird. EDIT: The zip file should work now. Thanks to Tristan Dreith for bringing the problem to my attention.

Doom 2 Original Executable

This is the original Doom 2 executable version 1.9. You may want this if you got the Doom Collector's Edition, which came with a crappy Windows port. There is a 99% percent chance this won't work if you have Windows 2000 or XP.

Doom Source Code

This is the source code for Doom, the actual C code written by Id Software. Due to some sound-related copyright problems, this is the Linux version of Doom and when compiled, there's no sound. This is still very similar to the MS-DOS version. Source port authors use this, but it's also pretty neat just to look at. The code can be opened in a text editor (like Notepad) or a compiler.

DoomEdit

DoomEdit is a program from way back in 1994. It can open up a saved game and edit things like which weapons you have, how much health, etc. It can be useful if you save your game at the wrong point. It doesn't work with saved games from source ports.
