PORTS

Over the years, many programmers have made Doom ports, free programs that enhance Doom. Whether 320x200 has gotten a bit too small or you've upgraded to Windows XP, Doom ports will help you out.
There is a wide range of ports. Some do just the basics: high resolution, easier network play, etc. But if you have a good video card and want to go nuts with it, you can get a port like Risen3D. I don't use a port, but I have tried some out and can make some recommendations. Here is a list of ports you can get for free.

NOTE: To use a port, extract all of it's files directly into the Doom (or Doom 2) folder.

PrBoom

PrBoom is my favorite port. It's easy to make it nearly identical to Classic Doom or to put it on par graphically with some of today's first-person shooters.

ZDoom

ZDoom is one of the best port I've seen, but some of the old versions are the best, if you ask me, as the uncapped framerate of the newer versions makes me dizzy. I like v1.23 beta 28a best (heh), which is here.

Doom Legacy

Doom Legacy has an appropriate name, keeping Doom pretty much the same except for some features like high riesolutions, rocket trails, looking up and down, stuff like that. It can also be used for Heretic (and I think Hexen).

WinDoom

WinDoom is the classic Doomer's port. Pretty much the only new feature is high resolutions. This used to be my favorite port, until I ran into countless bugs.
NOTE: When downloading this, save it to the Doom (or Doom 2) folder because opening it automatically extracts files directly into the folder it's in.

Edge

Edge is pretty good. It's a lot like ZDoom or Legacy.
